Disney Results Will Skew Player of the Year Voting, but Unclear How Much

Improb­a­bly paired with each other for all four rounds of the season-ending Children’s Mir­a­cle Net­work Hos­pi­tals Clas­sic, world No. 1 Luke Don­ald and money list runner-up Webb Simp­son made their respec­tive final case to their peers for the PGA Tour Player of the Year race.

Don­ald made the best case, hoist­ing the tro­phy he received from Don­ald Duck. Over­taken by Don­ald, Simp­son saluted the vic­to­ri­ous world No. 1.

“We gave our­selves a chance. The fact is, play­ing against the best player in the world, he’s going to do some­thing great like that most of the time, and he did and made six birdies in a row,” he said.

After the round, Don­ald and Simp­son had a brief con­ver­sa­tion to wrap up their four rounds together.

“Just, Con­grats. Well done. You deserve it. You’ve played great,” Don­ald said of what Simp­son told him. “I told him the same. What­ever hap­pens – you know, obvi­ously tour­na­ment wasn’t over by then – I said, ‘What­ever hap­pens, we both had great years and should both be proud.’”

Simp­son enjoyed the expe­ri­ence, say­ing, “We had a blast out there. Kind of a tir­ing week play­ing together every day and think­ing about all that’s going on. I’m glad it’s over. He played great. My hat’s off to him.”

Com­ing into the event, Don­ald knew a win was in order to con­vince his peers to vote for him for the Player of the Year award.

“It was pretty clear to me that from what every­one thought, I needed to win this week to be able to sway some people’s votes,” he said.

Hav­ing done that, Don­ald knows he has made his best case – and changed some minds.

“I think I’ve answered everyone’s ques­tions. Obvi­ously com­ing into this week I felt like Webb was prob­a­bly favorite, you know, based on he was ahead of me on the money list and he was ahead of me on wins this year. Obvi­ously drawn level on wins and I’ve got­ten ahead on money.”

Though Don­ald won the Dis­ney event and the money title with it, Simp­son is not cer­tain how the vot­ing will go.

“I think on paper our years have been pretty sim­i­lar. He’s maybe had a cou­ple more Top 10s, and now he’s got a cou­ple wins,” he said. “It’s going to be inter­est­ing to see what hap­pens. It really will. I didn’t think it was going to come down this though week; maybe it will. We’ll see.”

Simp­son does know, how­ever, who he will vote for with his ballot.

“Still prob­a­bly up in the air a lit­tle bit, but I’m sure I’ll vote for myself,” he said.
