Disney Results Will Skew Player of the Year Voting, but Unclear How Much
Improbably paired with each other for all four rounds of the season-ending Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, world No. 1 Luke Donald and money list runner-up Webb Simpson made their respective final case to their peers for the PGA Tour Player of the Year race.
Donald made the best case, hoisting the trophy he received from Donald Duck. Overtaken by Donald, Simpson saluted the victorious world No. 1.
“We gave ourselves a chance. The fact is, playing against the best player in the world, he’s going to do something great like that most of the time, and he did and made six birdies in a row,” he said.
After the round, Donald and Simpson had a brief conversation to wrap up their four rounds together.
“Just, Congrats. Well done. You deserve it. You’ve played great,” Donald said of what Simpson told him. “I told him the same. Whatever happens – you know, obviously tournament wasn’t over by then – I said, ‘Whatever happens, we both had great years and should both be proud.’”
Simpson enjoyed the experience, saying, “We had a blast out there. Kind of a tiring week playing together every day and thinking about all that’s going on. I’m glad it’s over. He played great. My hat’s off to him.”
Coming into the event, Donald knew a win was in order to convince his peers to vote for him for the Player of the Year award.
“It was pretty clear to me that from what everyone thought, I needed to win this week to be able to sway some people’s votes,” he said.
Having done that, Donald knows he has made his best case – and changed some minds.
“I think I’ve answered everyone’s questions. Obviously coming into this week I felt like Webb was probably favorite, you know, based on he was ahead of me on the money list and he was ahead of me on wins this year. Obviously drawn level on wins and I’ve gotten ahead on money.”
Though Donald won the Disney event and the money title with it, Simpson is not certain how the voting will go.
“I think on paper our years have been pretty similar. He’s maybe had a couple more Top 10s, and now he’s got a couple wins,” he said. “It’s going to be interesting to see what happens. It really will. I didn’t think it was going to come down this though week; maybe it will. We’ll see.”
Simpson does know, however, who he will vote for with his ballot.
“Still probably up in the air a little bit, but I’m sure I’ll vote for myself,” he said.
