Rev Up for F1 Testing

As we rev up for the For­mula One sea­son the win­ter test­ing begins in Valen­cia, Spain. This Mon­day sees the begin­ning of a three-day ses­sion; Fer­rari, McLaren, Mer­cedes, Toro Rosso, Sauber and Renault are on the track. 

Renault are wheel­ing out their new R30 which is con­sid­ered to be more “svelte and attrac­tive” than it’s pre­de­ces­sor accord­ing to their tech­ni­cal direc­tor James Alli­son. Its archi­tec­ture makes it a far more aero­dy­namic and fuel effi­cient vehicle.

Red Bull Racing’s sec­ond team, Scud­e­ria Toro Rosso, unveiled their new STR5 the first car they have built and designed them­selves. For­mula One had banned cus­tomer cars but after increas­ing its staff last year from 150 — 200, Toro Rosso were finally approved as an F1 Constructor.

Mer­cedes have a new GP team and F1 car for Michael Schu­macher. The seven-time world cham­pion was faster than team­mate Ros­berg within 20 laps, clock­ing a best lap of 1 minute, 12.947 sec­onds. But Felipe Massa’s new Fer­rari beat Schumacher’s Mer­cedes for speed in the ses­sions. Massa is return­ing to For­mula One after his life threat­en­ing crash last sum­mer. He frac­tured his skull dur­ing the H the Hun­gar­ian Grand Prix last July.
