Rookie QBs Newton, Dalton Chosen First Alternates for Pro Bowl

Fans of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and his counterpart in Cincinnati, Andy Dalton, who started the afternoon griping about their guys being snubbed for the Pro Bowl can relax. That’s because there’s a pretty good chance one, or even both, rookies could wind up on the sidelines in Hawaii after all. Newton and Dalton have each been voted first alternates at their position, Newton for the NFC and Dalton for the AFC. Brooks: Class of 2011 is special Because the Pro Bowl is played on the Sunday between the conference championship...

NC State Holds Off Cards in Belk Bowl

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Moments after Louisville’s comeback bid fell short in a 31–24 loss to North Carolina State in the Belk Bowl, coach Charlie Strong was anxiously looking forward to next season instead of dwelling on the defeat. Who can blame him? The Cardinals finished 7–6 this season despite starting 10 freshmen, including promising young quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. So their future seems promising following a season in which they finished tied for first place in the Big East and qualified for a bowl. “We have so much coming back...

NHL Roundup: Pens Beat Hurricanes

Pittsburgh 4, Carolina 2 Pittsburgh, PA - James Neal recorded a goal and one assist as Pittsburgh used a three-goal third period to defeat Carolina, 4–2, at CONSOL Energy Center. Steve Sullivan, Pascal Dupuis and Jordan Staal lit the lamp in the final 20 minutes for the Penguins, who have won four straight games. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 16-of-18 shots for the victory. Tuomo Ruutu and Tim Brent scored for the Hurricanes, whose two-game win streak was halted. Pressed into service because of games on consecutive nights in two locations, Justin Peters...

Nadal Says He Was Too Predictable

Updated Dec 27, 2011 5:27 AM ET Rafael Nadal says his game this year was too predictable and he sometimes lacked drive on court — weaknesses he plans to overcome for 2012. “With the years, you lose a bit of intensity. Intensity in your self-belief, concentration, being positive, believing things will go well — those are in the mind. With the years you lose that a bit,” he told the Spanish daily El Pais in an interview published Monday. The 25-year-old world No. 2 led Spain to a fifth Davis Cup title in December and won the French Open this year. But...

Former Patriot Houston Antwine Dies at 72

Former Patriot Houston Antwine dies at 72 Posted by Michael David Smith on December 27, 2011, 4:50 PM EST Houston Antwine, a defensive lineman for the Boston Patriots who was named to the AFL’s All-Time Team, has died at the age of 72. Antwine died of heart failure on Monday night. Hours later, his wife Evelyn died of lung cancer on Tuesday morning. “For those of us who grew up watching the Boston Patriots, this is a really sad day,” Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft said in a statement released by the team. “In the 1960s, the defensive tackle...

Seven Patriots Players Named Pro Bowl Starters for AFC

NEW YORK — Tom Brady is one of eight New England Patriots and Patrick Willis one of eight San Francisco 49ers to be selected to the Pro Bowl, the most, respectively, on the AFC and NFC rosters. Defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay, led by starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and Baltimore, led by veteran linebacker Ray Lewis, have seven apiece for the Jan. 29 game in Honolulu, the NFL announced Tuesday. Brady is one of seven starters from New England (12–3) who will represent the AFC. The others are receiver Wes Welker, tight end Rob Gronkowski, defensive...

Oregon Goes With Special Uni for Rose Bowl Appearance

Oregon goes with special uni for Rose Bowl appearance Posted by Ben Kercheval on December 27, 2011, 4:21 PM EST Last week, Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said the Badgers would be sporting ever-so-slightly altered uniforms for the 2012 Rose Bowl against Oregon. As it turned out, “slightly” meant rose petal designs drawn into the numbers of UW’s jersey. While that’s hardly a radical move — you’re not going to find Wisconsin tampering too much with tradition — Oregon has once again come up with a new design for the Rose Bowl that looks like it...

Video: Ricky Rubio Dishes Out Assists in Debut

Ricky Rubio looked very good in his debut. The numbers did not jump off the page — six points, six assists, five rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench — but he altered the game while in. His court sense is amazing and his sense of pace and timing is mature beyond his years. Oh, and the passes. Here are his assists, compiled by NBA.com (via Ball Don’t Lie). Enjoy. The Wolves are going to be fun this year. BetLM's sports betting news features unique sports betting articles as well as current sports news compiled from leading wire services. On Schumacher’s Age Again

It is interesting that since Michael Schumacher returned from retirement two seasons ago now, after three years away from racing, and he has not yet scored a podium finish, one of the frequent arguments for his successful return was that despite being 41 years old — he turns 43 on January 3 — he was in just as good and perhaps better physical condition as most of the young drivers on the grid. There is really no argument against that, and it is clear just looking at Schumacher and how he moves and appears in great physical condition thanks...

Steelers Not Ruling Out Roethlisberger vs. Browns

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said injured quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and center Maurkice Pouncey have a “shot” to play in the regular-season finale against the Cleveland Browns. Both players sat out last Saturday’s 27–0 victory over St. Louis with high ankle sprains. Veteran Charlie Batch passed for 208 yards in place of Roethlisberger, who was active but missed his first game of the season. A series of injuries along the offensive line forced Trai Essex to take snaps at center for the first time. Tomlin praised the play of the backups...
