Recruiting Violations Led to Boise Bans
BOISE, Idaho —Boise State coach Chris Petersen is hoping the Broncos will have their Dutch trio available for the first time this season against Toledo.
No. 4 Boise State (1–0) opened its season in Atlanta on Sept. 3 without senior safety Cedric Febis, sophomore receiver Geraldo Boldewijn and sophomore defensive tackle Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe.
The school announced the day before its opener against Georgia that the three players from Amsterdam faced NCAA eligibility problems. All three played their senior seasons in Boise high schools before signing with Boise State.
“We don’t have any new news for the Amsterdam kids, we’re hoping we’ll know something soon,” Petersen said while opening his weekly news conference. “I’m like you guys, I check every day.
“I know we’re going to know more (this week).”
Febis was slated to be one of Boise State’s starting safeties and Boldewijn was expected to be one of Kellen Moore’s primary targets. Tjong-A-Tjoe had 6.5 tackles for loss in a backup role in 2010.
“These guys are crushed,” Petersen said. “Cedric’s been here a long time and finally gets his opportunity, and the day before the biggest game of his life, or a couple days, it’s like ‘this isn’t going to happen.’ That’s been really, really hard.
“We’re just trying to be as supportive as we can to these guys and we’re just really hopeful that we get them back.”
Petersen said all three are practicing with the team. He hopes to have a few days’ notice whether the players will be able at Toledo (1–1) Friday night.
Boise State has not revealed the exact nature of the probe, but did say it was not academic or a team rules violation. Petersen said “they’re looking at everything from A to Z.”
Saying the issue was “very much out of left field,” Petersen acknowledged changes in area schools’ rules regarding such transfers, but also had a bit of surprise considering the players have been with the program for at least two years each.
“There was no indication there were any problems at all,” he said. “One of the reasons was also that after Geraldo and Ricky were here, the high schools put a law into effect that they couldn’t come over for one year and play.”
As they did against Georgia, the Broncos are tentatively planning on using redshirt freshman Jeremy Ioane and senior Travis Stanaway at safety in Febis’ absence, plus continued larger roles for redshirt freshman Matt Miller and true freshman Dallas Burroughs to make up for Boldewijn’s size and speed.
Notes: Starter Dan Paul (fullback) is doubtful with a groin injury and Joe Kellogg (guard) is “day-to-day” with a knee injury he suffered against Georgia. The injury was originally labeled one that would keep him out for a few weeks. … Regarding Toledo, Petersen said “If you watched the tape of the game against Ohio State, they played right with them. It’s not a fluke. It’s a good football team.”
