COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland football has granted quarterback Danny O’Brien’s request for a release from the program to play elsewhere. Head football coach Randy Edsall announced Monday that O’Brien, lineman Max Garcia and linebacker Mario Rowson were all granted releases from the program. Edsall says O’Brien, who played in nine games last season, told him he was not committed to the program and wants a fresh start. PSU AD on Leave Wants Charges Tossed

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A Penn State administrator is asking a judge to throw out charges that he lied to the grand jury investigating child sex abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky and that he failed to report suspected abuse. Tim Curley filed motions in Dauphin County Court on Monday that argued the death of football coach Joe Paterno last month leaves prosecutors without a required second witness to support the perjury charge. He says allegations he didn’t report suspected abuse in 2002 were filed under a revision of the law that was passed...

A Miami Herald Sunday column shares portions of numerous e-mails Shapiro used to communicate from jail over the past few months. And, like he did with Charles Robinson of Yahoo! If you’re Bob Stoops, you play on a Sunday in a PGA tour event in front of a national television audience, that’s what you do. Paired with current PGA Tour pro and former OU golfer Hunter Haas, the Oklahoma head coach is tied for ninth after three rounds of the AT&T...

Hope for UCLA? With Mora in Charge, Things Are Looking Up

OK, I’ll admit it. When UCLA first hired Jim Mora Jr., my initial reaction was, basically, this: Wow, what’s happened to UCLA? Have they really fallen this far? And what on earth does Jim Mora Jr. know about college football, anyway? Well, a couple months later, I must say, I am duly impressed with Mora’s performance so far-most especially his efforts on the recruiting trail-and am actually beginning to think that this guy might turn out to be a winner in Westwood (and, hey, he can’t be much worse than Rick Neuheisel, can he?). While serious questions...

NCAA Proposes Moving Kickoffs to 35

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The NCAA football rules committee has proposed moving kickoffs from the 30-yard line to the 35 and to limit the running start by players on the kicking team to 5 yards as a way of keeping players safer. NCAA says its injury data indicates injuries during kickoffs occur more often than in other phases of the game. The NFL moved up kickoffs 5 yards this past season and touchbacks increased dramatically. The committee also proposed a rule that would require a player who loses his helmet during a play to stop participating and...
