NFL History
Along the National Football League history, several different formats to determine their league champion have been used, including a period of inter-league match-ups to determine a true world champion.
The National Football League began determined their champions through an end of season standings, but switched over to a playoff system in 1933.
During the years, 1966-1969, the NFL and the ALF (All-American Football Conference) which has since merged with the NFL, held a “world championship” game. The game was initially called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game later renamed the Super Bowl.
Since 1970, the NFL has become the only major professional football league in the United States. The current championship league game is called the Super Bowl.
