McIlroy, Wozniacki Create Nickname

We’ve had Brangelina, Ben­nifer and TomKat … but is the world ready for Wozzilroy?

Sport’s newest star cou­ple Rory McIl­roy and Car­o­line Woz­ni­acki seemed to think so Tues­day, tak­ing the power away from the press when it came to cre­at­ing their mor­phed nick­name — and offer­ing up their own, rather clunky, brand.

In a tweet, world No. 1 ten­nis player Woz­ni­acki wrote, “Here is my new club @McilroyRory made for me.” Attached was a photo of a Titleist wedge the North­ern Irish golf star gave her as her present, with “Wozzil­roy” inscribed along its edge.

The 21-year-old Dane, cur­rently in Tokyo for the Toray Pan Pacific Open, then said she had asked Yonex to cus­tomize rack­ets for McIlroy.

“@McIlroyRory your RACQUETS are on the way;) lol.. Yonex are already work­ing on them:),” she wrote.

Woz­ni­acki and US Open cham­pion McIl­roy, 22, have been an item since August and McIl­roy has said he believes they can help each other get the best out of their careers. Whether Woz­ni­acki truly deserves to be the top-ranked wom­ens’ ten­nis player has been widely debated because she is yet to win a grand slam, while McIl­roy is yet to sit atop golf’s world rankings.

“I think we def­i­nitely spur each other on. She’s No. 1 in the world and I’ve got a major, and we sort of both want what each other have,” the world No. 3 McIl­roy said.

“It’s a big goal of mine. I want to become the best player in the world.”
