Actu­ally, it was a very whole­some time for all of us. Even though I was a pre­teen I could throw, really throw so I was able to com­pete with the older guys on the play­ing field. In fact, I bat­ted 3rd as a fifth grader on our 6th grade cham­pi­onship base­ball team.

Many years later, I returned to visit our Church. There, next to the Statue of Mary, was a statue erected in honor of the parish­ioners who lost their lives in the Viet­nam War. I was aston­ished to read the names of so many of my friends from stoop ball days who were no longer around, no longer able to watch a ball­game, enjoy a beer, raise a child or rem­i­nisce about the stoop ball days.

All things change! It’s a part of life we must accept. Some change is good, some change is very good.
