Nguyen Eliminated from World Series of Poker

On Wednes­day night, 1998 cham­pion Scotty Nguyen was erad­i­cated from the World Series of Poker. Now poker fans will see just one for­mer cham­pion com­pet­ing in the main event for the $8.94 mil­lion top prize.

Nguyen staked his final 310,000 chips on one of the last hands of the night with a suited ace-jack, but to his dis­may Mads Wiss­ing of Copen­hagen, Den­mark had pocket kings. The five-time gold bracelet vic­tor seized around $48,847, fin­ish­ing 209th.

Now, Johnny Chan, who has won the gold bracelet 10-times with back-to-back main event vic­to­ries in main events in 1987 and 1988, will con­tend as the one and only for­mer win­ner in the world’s rich­est no-limit Texas Hold ‘em tour­na­ment. Chan won nearly 2.6 mil­lion in chips on Wednes­day night, mak­ing him one of the chip leaders.

Fol­low­ing the end of the fifth ses­sion, the remain­ing 200 play­ers, rep­re­sent­ing less than 3 per­cent of a start­ing field of 7,319 play­ers, will com­pete in the sixth ses­sion to whit­tle the field to about 81 play­ers for the final nine tables. The final table will be decided over the week­end, and the final nine play­ers will resume the poker game in Novem­ber after a break. The entry cost for the tour­ney, which started at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, is $10,000. Last year’s champ, Joe Cads, won $8.55 million.
