Nguyen Eliminated from World Series of Poker
On Wednesday night, 1998 champion Scotty Nguyen was eradicated from the World Series of Poker. Now poker fans will see just one former champion competing in the main event for the $8.94 million top prize.
Nguyen staked his final 310,000 chips on one of the last hands of the night with a suited ace-jack, but to his dismay Mads Wissing of Copenhagen, Denmark had pocket kings. The five-time gold bracelet victor seized around $48,847, finishing 209th.
Now, Johnny Chan, who has won the gold bracelet 10-times with back-to-back main event victories in main events in 1987 and 1988, will contend as the one and only former winner in the world’s richest no-limit Texas Hold ‘em tournament. Chan won nearly 2.6 million in chips on Wednesday night, making him one of the chip leaders.
Following the end of the fifth session, the remaining 200 players, representing less than 3 percent of a starting field of 7,319 players, will compete in the sixth session to whittle the field to about 81 players for the final nine tables. The final table will be decided over the weekend, and the final nine players will resume the poker game in November after a break. The entry cost for the tourney, which started at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, is $10,000. Last year’s champ, Joe Cads, won $8.55 million.
