Texans Bring in Delhomme to Back Up New Starting QB Yates
Veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme signed with the Houston Texans, his agent told The Associated Press on Tuesday, shortly after a league source had confirmed the move to NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak later shared his excitement about adding Delhomme, telling the Houston Chronicle that the quarterback will “fit in perfectly with what we were looking for.”
“He’s a leader and a good person,” Kubiak said. “He’s played in big games. He’s got West Coast (offense) verbiage in his background. He was so upbeat about coming here. He showed good arm strength.
“I was impressed. He’s just a very impressive guy.”
The Texans are dangerously thin at quarterback in the wake of season-ending injuries to Matt Schaub (foot) and Matt Leinart (collarbone). Delhomme will back up rookie T.J. Yates, a fifth-round draft pick who will start Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, and the Texans also have veteran Kellen Clemens, who signed with the team last week.
Rick Smith, Delhomme’s agent, didn’t know if his client would be No. 2 or No. 3 on Houston’s depth chart this week. But Smith said Delhomme would only consider playing for a handful of teams if he ever came back, and the Texans were one of them.
“Gary runs a very quarterback-friendly system,” said Smith, who also represents former Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels. “It’s a great offensive system, and quarterbacks, they love it.”
Smith also said Delhomme, who beat out 41-year-old Jeff Garcia in a Tuesday tryout, has been staying in shape and working with racehorses in Louisiana since the Cleveland Browns cut him in July.
Delhomme has thrown for 20,764 yards with 125 touchdowns with 101 interceptions in 10 NFL seasons. He started four games for the Browns last year before giving way to then-rookie quarterback Colt McCoy.
