Texans Bring in Delhomme to Back Up New Starting QB Yates

Vet­eran quar­ter­back Jake Del­homme signed with the Hous­ton Tex­ans, his agent told The Asso­ci­ated Press on Tues­day, shortly after a league source had con­firmed the move to NFL Net­work insider Jason La Canfora.

Tex­ans coach Gary Kubiak later shared his excite­ment about adding Del­homme, telling the Hous­ton Chron­i­cle that the quar­ter­back will “fit in per­fectly with what we were look­ing for.”

“He’s a leader and a good per­son,” Kubiak said. “He’s played in big games. He’s got West Coast (offense) ver­biage in his back­ground. He was so upbeat about com­ing here. He showed good arm strength.

“I was impressed. He’s just a very impres­sive guy.”

The Tex­ans are dan­ger­ously thin at quar­ter­back in the wake of season-ending injuries to Matt Schaub (foot) and Matt Leinart (col­lar­bone). Del­homme will back up rookie T.J. Yates, a fifth-round draft pick who will start Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Fal­cons, and the Tex­ans also have vet­eran Kellen Clemens, who signed with the team last week.

Rick Smith, Delhomme’s agent, didn’t know if his client would be No. 2 or No. 3 on Houston’s depth chart this week. But Smith said Del­homme would only con­sider play­ing for a hand­ful of teams if he ever came back, and the Tex­ans were one of them.

“Gary runs a very quarterback-friendly sys­tem,” said Smith, who also rep­re­sents for­mer Tex­ans quar­ter­back Sage Rosen­fels. “It’s a great offen­sive sys­tem, and quar­ter­backs, they love it.”

Smith also said Del­homme, who beat out 41-year-old Jeff Gar­cia in a Tues­day try­out, has been stay­ing in shape and work­ing with race­horses in Louisiana since the Cleve­land Browns cut him in July.

Del­homme has thrown for 20,764 yards with 125 touch­downs with 101 inter­cep­tions in 10 NFL sea­sons. He started four games for the Browns last year before giv­ing way to then-rookie quar­ter­back Colt McCoy.
