Rex Ryan Drops Strong Hint That Mangold Won’t Play

Jets cen­ter Nick Man­gold has a high-ankle sprain.  It’s unlikely that he’ll play on Sun­day against the Raiders.

On Thurs­day, coach Rex Ryan essen­tially con­firmed that.

Asked if he’s wait­ing to rule Man­gold out of Sunday’s game as a sign of respect, Ryan said, “I think so.  When you look at it, he’s got an 82-game streak going.  That’s impor­tant.  The fact he wants to help his team­mates out, you want to encour­age him.  He’s doing the treat­ment.  He’s off the crutches, doing dif­fer­ent things.  He’s been on a bike and he’s also doing other exer­cises and stuff.  For a high-ankle sprain, he’s well ahead of the game.

“We’ll make that deci­sion.  Some­times you’ve got to pro­tect the player from the player.  If that’s the pru­dent thing to do, then that’s what we’ll do.”

Man­gold, who didn’t prac­tice on Wednes­day or Thurs­day, is expected to miss two-to-three weeks with the injury.

Lim­ited in prac­tice for the sec­ond straight day were defen­sive tackle Mike Devito (shoul­der), line­backer David Har­ris (toe), receiver San­to­nio Holmes (quad), safety Jim Leon­hard (ham­string), safety Eric Smith (ankle), and defen­sive end Muham­mad Wilk­er­son (shoul­der).  Full par­tic­i­pants were defen­sive tackle Mar­cus Dixon (knee), receiver Der­rick Mason (knee), and quar­ter­back Mark Sanchez (right elbow).
