NFL Playoff Gamble — Good Teams Play Good Games
The National Football League has grown in stature year after year. The NFL was not always the most popular spectator sport. The games of the 1930’s and 40’s were simply constructed offenses competing against unimaginative defenses but there were outstanding players during the early days of the NFL. Running back Red Grange, the “Galloping Ghost,” was a great running back for the Chicago Bears. Quarterbacks Sid Luckman, Otto Graham and Norm Van Brocklin starred at the premier position in football.
There is always a defining moment in sports history in which an athletic event is so monumental that it crystallizes the sport in the eyes of the public. Professional football took the giant stride forward in 1958 when the Championship was nationally televised by WCBS. The New York Giants had won the Championship in 1956 in stirring fashion, and were expected to dispose of the visiting Indianapolis Colts with little trouble.
The Indianapolis Colts were an NFL playoff gamble at best. However, quarterback Johnny Unitas led a comeback in the second half with a series of short passes to wide receiver Raymond Berry. In the waning seconds of the game with the Giants nursing a three point lead, Unitas led a comeback with passes to Berry and runs of fullback Alan Ameche to set up a field goal attempt by kicker Steve Myra. As the final gun sounded, the kick went through the uprights to knot the score at 17 apiece. In the overtime, the Colts drove the ball down the length of the field on the strength of the right arm of Unitas. Short passes to Berry put the ball at the New York Giant 2 yard line. It was a good NFL playoff gamble at that point to assume that fullback Ameche would get the call and that is precisely what occurred. Ameche took the handoff and burst over right tackle to win the Championship for the Colts, and elevate the NFL into the most prominent league in the eyes of the world.
The best NFL playoff gamble is to bet on the hot team coming into the playoffs since any team can defeat any other team on any given Sunday. All it takes is a little research to make your NFL playoff gamble payoff. A great source for NFL betting is LinesMaker Sportsbook.
