Coach Spagnuolo, GM Devaney Fired by Rams

Less than 24 hours after a loss to the San Fran­cisco 49ers cemented a dis­mal 2–14 sea­son, the St. Louis Rams have fired head coach Steve Spag­n­uolo, Fox Sports insider and NFL Net­work con­trib­u­tor Jay Glazer reported.

Not long after Spagnuolo’s fir­ing, a league source told NFL Network’s Michael Lom­bardi that the Rams also fired gen­eral man­ager Billy Devaney. Devaney went 12–52 in his four years as the Rams’ GM.

The Rams con­firmed the moves shortly after with a state­ment from owner Stan Kroenke.

“I would like to per­son­ally thank Steven and Billy for their ded­i­ca­tion to the St. Louis Rams over the past sev­eral sea­sons,” Kroenke said. “This was a dif­fi­cult deci­sion for many rea­sons. We have tremen­dous respect for Steve and Billy as peo­ple and foot­ball pro­fes­sion­als. … How­ever, we believe it’s in the best inter­est of the St. Louis Rams to make the­ses changes as we con­tinue our quest to build a team that con­sis­tently com­petes for play­offs and championships.”

Spag­n­uolo and the Rams came within one win from a play­off berth last year — his sec­ond sea­son as the Rams’ head coach — but the team fell apart this sea­son amid a slew of injuries and unin­spired performances.

The Rams ended the year on a seven-game los­ing streak as spec­u­la­tion swirled that Spag­n­uolo would be let go at the end of the season.

Spag­n­uolo went 10–38 in his three years with the Rams.
