Spreads on NBA Games – Make an Informed Wager
The National Basketball Association has been around since 1947. The NBA had its roots in some smaller cities before it established itself in the larger markets. The early NBA had franchises in places such as Rochester and Syracuse, New York and Fort Wayne, Indiana. In the late 1950’s, the Rochester franchise moved to Cincinnati and became the Cincinnati Royals, who quickly signed All-American guard Oscar Robertson to give the franchise instant credibility. It worked to perfection. Cincy competed with the Boston Celtics through the 1960’s. They were never able to topple the Celts, but they gave Coach Red Auerbach a run for his money. The Philadelphia Warriors moved to San Francisco in the early 60’s, and they still play there under the moniker of the Golden State Warriors. In 1960, The Pistons abandoned Fort Wayne and moved to Detroit, establishing themselves as one of the premier franchises in the league. It was only a couple years after the Warriors abandoned Philadelphia for the west coast “City by the Bay,” that the Syracuse franchise up and moved to Philadelphia, so the Syracuse Nationals became the Philadelphia 76ers. With all the juxtapositioning of the NBA teams, there has always been one constant through the years. The NBA home teams sport a big advantage when it comes to spreads on NBA games.
The spreads on NBA games can be quite disillusioning at times. For example, the spreads on NBA games between the same two clubs might look something like this: Boston –4 versus the Knicks at Boston Garden. On the following evening, with no lineup changes, the line might look like this: New York –6 versus Boston at Madison Square Garden. The sports betting investor might find the visiting underdog a good play in both instances. However, the bettor should remember that, in close games, there is a tendency for the lead to increase to the final score because of intentional fouling at the end of the contest. The spreads on NBA games are affected greatly by the home court advantage factor.
