Time for Title Sponsor Talks Again
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series could see its title sponsor change once again. Sprint is in the eighth year of a ten year $ 750 Million contract. NASCAR and Sprint have started discussing if/how/when to renew their agreement.
Neither party is bringing as much to the table as they did in 2003.NASCAR ratings and attendance aren’t what they used to be and Sprint has posted 15 straight quarters of losses. It is not unreasonable to think that Sprint may not want to continue to invest as heavily in NASCAR.
Winston was the title sponsor from 1971 through 2003.NEXTEL took over with the start of the 2004 NASCAR season and continued until NEXTEL was purchased by Sprint who took over the naming rights at the start of the 2008 season.Depending on what happens with the negotiations we could see another name change as early as 2014.
Do all these name changes hurt the NASCAR brand?
