Stewart Wins Homestead to Win NASCAR Championship
By JENNA FRYER, Auto Racing Writer HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Tony Stewart nearly wrote off his season during a summer slump, then dismissed his chances at the beginning of NASCAR’s championship chase. Then something suddenly changed– with his cars, with his attitude, with his driving– and old Smoke was back. With a vengeance. Stewart thrust himself early into title contention, then never let up as he drove all over the competition and chased down Carl Edwards. He seized his third championship Sunday night with a powerful and relentless drive that...
Edwards Qualifies 1st at Homestead, Stewart 15th
By JENNA FRYER Auto Racing Writer HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Tony Stewart has run his mouth for almost a month trying to rattle Carl Edwards in the race to NASCAR’s championship. Edwards has tuned it all out, and on Saturday he did his talking on the track. Edwards won the pole for Sunday’s season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where the Sprint Cup Series championship will be decided. Edwards goes into the race with a three-point lead over Stewart, who qualified 15th. One of the two will bring an official end to Jimmie Johnson’s record five-year run, and the...
Drivers Who Claimed the Cup With a Win
This weekend either Carl Edwards or Tony Stewart can close out the 2011 Chase for the Cup with a win. The best way to earn Championship points is to win the race so you would think that drivers battling for the Championship would regularly win the last race of the year on their way to the title. However, only six times in NASCAR’s history has the Champion won the final race of the season. Here is the entire list of NASCAR Champions who ended their season with a win. Will Carl Edwards or Tony Stewart join this list this weekend? BetLM's sports betting news features unique sports betting articles as well as current sports news compiled from leading wire services. Speeding Along With Kurt Busch
By JOHN MARSHALL Auto Racing Writer AVONDALE, Ariz. — The speedometer approaching 120 mph, the outside wall a foot or so from the door, and Kurt Busch had one hand on the wheel, the other pointing and waving as he described the nuances of the track. The passengers — well, at least one of them — had a death grip on the door handles, but Busch was cruising along as if he were a small-town tour guide showing us the sights while tooling along in a convertible Studebaker: “And on the right, you’ll find the boyhood home of pecan baron Al Crawford…” ...
Carl Edwards’ Magic Number
What is Carl Edwards’ “Magic Number” this weekend? That is, what is the lowest position that Carl can finish and still clinch the title no matter what Tony Stewart does? First. That’s it. If Carl wins the race then there is nothing Tony can do to win the Cup. Anything less than a win leaves the door open for Tony Stewart to gain three points on Carl and claim the crown. This is as close as a Championship battle can be. The 2011 Championship may come down to pit strategy, fuel mileage, a ten-cent part, an extra quarter turn on a wrench or a thousand...
Hornish Jr. Captures First NASCAR Victory
By JOHN MARSHALL, Sports Writer AVONDALE, Ariz. — Sam Hornish Jr. pumped his fist out the window, made a nice grab to catch the checkered flag and circled toward Victory Lane. He pulled up next to the trophy, climbed out of his car and had trouble getting the words out, his voice cracking as tears filled his eyes. After everything Hornish had been through since switching to NASCAR, this victory four years in the making hit him with a flood of emotion. One of the most accomplished American open-wheel drivers in history, Hornish took his first NASCAR victory...
Kyle Busch to Face More Penalties From JGR
By JENNA FRYER Auto Racing Writer AVONDALE, Ariz. — Kyle Busch, contrite and remorseful, promised Friday to change his behavior and conduct himself in a way that will restore the respect he lost with his road rage incident at Texas. It’s a long way back for Busch, and he’ll be on a very short leash. Busch has been warned by M&M’s that the primary sponsor will not tolerate any more incidents by him, and team owner Joe Gibbs said the driver is still facing further punishment for wrecking Ron Hornaday Jr. under caution in last week’s Truck...
