McMurray Wins 2010 Daytona 500

Jamie McMur­ray won the 2010 Day­tona 500 at the Day­tona Inter­na­tional Speed­way on Sunday.

It was an unpre­dictable and drama filled sea­son opener, the race was delayed twice due to track repairs to fill pot­holes in the tracks sur­face. In lap 8 there was a six-car crash and in lap 122 another repair was needed on turn 22 which stopped the race for 1 hour and 42 minutes.

The race saw over 50 lead changes mak­ing it one of the most com­pet­i­tive races in the his­tory of the Day­tona 500. The 23-year-old McMur­ray had 12-time Day­tona win­ner Earn­hardt in hot pur­suit on his bumper but McMur­ray took the lead in the final two laps beat­ing Earn­hardt by .119 sec­onds. It was an emo­tional win for McMur­ray, he was hardly able to put words together for the press as he choked back the tears.

The news was not so good for Dan­ica Patrick. Her NASCAR debut on Sat­ur­day in the Drive4COPD 300 Nation­wide Series race at Day­tona Inter­na­tional Speed­way was cut short when she was involved in a 12-car crash in lap 69. Dale Earn­hardt was also involved in the smoke filled crash, Patrick’s vis­i­bil­ity was har­bored and she crashed into the wall. Luck­ily she remained unscathed but was dis­ap­pointed that she failed to fin­ish in her debut and placed 35th out of 43 drivers.
