Jockey Gomez Sidelined by Broken Left Heel

ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockey Gar­rett Gomez had surgery Thurs­day for a bro­ken left heel that will keep him out of the sad­dle for four to six weeks.

Gomez’s agent, Tony Matos, says the surgery was done at the Kerlan-Jobe Ortho­pe­dic Clinic in Los Angeles.

Gomez was injured Sun­day before the Day­tona Stakes at Santa Anita when his mount Sil­ver Sum­ma­tion unseated the 40-year-old rider before flip­ping over back­ward leav­ing the paddock.

Gomez had been off to a good start at the track’s win­ter meet­ing with six stakes vic­to­ries through the first 10 days, includ­ing the Sham Stakes with Out of Bounds last weekend.
