Super 16: Bruins Still at Top, Welcome New Company
For the seventh week in a row, the Boston Bruins rest comfortably atop the Super 16.
The Bruins are 20–2-1 since their 3–7 October. The only reason they’ve lost those three games in nearly two months has been because of fantastic performances from opposing goalies.
On Nov. 25, the Red Wings won 3–2 in a shootout on the back of Jimmy Howard’s 41 saves. In the Bruins’ back-to-back losses on Dec. 6 and 8, the Jets’ Ondrej Pavelec made 39 saves in a 2–1 victory and the Panthers’ Jose Theodore made 40 saves in a 2–0 victory.
The rest of this week’s Super 16 is pretty similar to last week’s, with only the Calgary Flames making their first appearance in the power rankings this season on the heels of perhaps the most impressive 3–0 week of the season.
RANK | TEAM (RECORD) | LAST WEEK | COMMENTARY |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Boston (23–9-1) | 1 | What can be said that hasn’t been said already? Brad Marchand’s 15 goals lead the team. They have nine players with at least 20 points. |
2 | Chicago (22–9-4) | 2 | The Blackhawks are 8–1-1 in their past 10 games. They went to overtime in five of those games. They have gone to OT in 11 of 35 games this season. |
3 | N.Y. Rangers (21–8-4) | 6 |
Their dominance in the second half of back-to-backs has been amazing. Since 2009-10, they are 25–8-3 in the second half of back-to-backs. |
4 | Philadelphia (21–9-4) | 3 | Ilya Bryzgalov enters the Christmas break with an .895 save percentage. The Flyers would like to see him come up humongous big during the rest of the season. |
5 | St. Louis (20–10-4) | 5 | Brian Elliott is now 14–3-0 in 18 games. In 55 games last season between the Senators and Avalanche, he had just 15 wins. |
6 | Pittsburgh (20–11-4) |
12 |
After a two-game hiccup, they outscored the Sabres, Blackhawks and Jets 15–6 in three victories. |
7 | Vancouver (21–12-2) | 8 |
Their three-game winning streak was snapped Friday by the surging Flames. Roberto Luongo has started 9 of 10 games.
|
8 | Detroit (21–12-1) | 4 |
In their five losses to non-playoff teams (Caps, Jackets, Avs and Flames twice), the Red Wings have been outscored 22–7. Ty Conklin was in net for four of those games.
|
9 | San Jose (19–10-3) | 11 | The once-beleaguered penalty kill has shut down 9 of 10 power plays in their past three games, all victories. They’ve won four straight. |
10 | Minnesota (20–11-5) | 7 | The Wild have lost six straight — four in regulation. January could be make-or-break: they play 7 of their 10 games that month on the road. |
11 | Dallas (20–13-1) | 14 | They continue to survive with Kari Lehtonen out of the lineup. Richard Bachman is 5–2-0 in 7 starts, all of which have come consecutively. |
12 | Nashville (18–13-4) | 10 | In very un-Predator-like fashion last week, they allowed 15 goals in three games, two of which they lost. |
13 | Florida (18–11-7) | 9 |
Are the wheels coming off? They’ve lost 6 of 8, but three losses have come after regulation. They still lead the Southeast by six points. |
14 | New Jersey (19–14-1) | 13 | The Devils rank No. 13 in the NHL in points percentage despite having the fourth-fewest regulation/OT wins. The shootout has saved them. |
15 | Phoenix (18–14-3) | 16 |
The Coyotes are 11–6-1 on the road, the fourth-best mark in the League. At home, they are 7–8-2, the fourth-worst mark in the League. |
16 | Calgary (17–15-2) | NR | All they did last week was beat the Wild, Wings and Canucks, who ranked second, fourth and fifth in the West starting the week. They’re 6–2-2 in their past 10. |
