Pittsburgh 3, NY Islanders 2 (SO)
Evgeni Malkin scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3–2 victory and a home-and-home sweep over the New York Islanders at CONSOL Energy Center. The Penguins defeated the Islanders, 3–0, in New York on Tuesday. Malkin managed to slide the puck under the toes of a sprawled out Rick DiPietro after the goaltender went down on a fake shot, and New York’s two remaining shooters, P.A. Parenteau and John Tavares, each shot wide of the net to seal the win. Chris Kunitz and James Neal scored third-period goals for the Penguins to send the game into overtime, while Marc-Andre Fleury made 17 saves in Pittsburgh’s fifth straight win. Evgeni Nabokov started in net for the Islanders and stopped 30-of-32 shots before DiPietro made his season debut by taking the net for the shootout. Frans Nielsen and Matt Martin notched the goals for New York, which lost its fourth consecutive contest.
Buffalo 4, Columbus 2
Jason Pominville scored twice and Thomas Vanek had three assists, as the Buffalo Sabres downed the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4–2. Brad Boyes and Patrick Kaleta both had a goal for the Sabres, who halted a two-game slide. Jhonas Enroth stopped 41 shots. Vinny Prospal and Fedor Tyutin scored for Columbus, which was coming off its first win of the season. Steve Mason made 22 saves.
Nashville 5, Tampa Bay 3
Mike Fisher registered two goals and set up another, helping the Nashville Predators earn their first home win of the season with a 5–3 decision over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Corey Perry, Bobby Ryan and Ryan Getzlaf each tallied a goal for the Ducks, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Jonas Hiller made 23 saves. Jared Spurgeon and Matt Cullen scored goals for Minnesota, while Niklas Backstrom stopped 13 shots in the Wild’s fourth loss in five games.
