Watney Tied for Vegas Lead With Chance for Third Win if Season
When the PGA Tour playoffs closed last weekend at the Tour Championship, it seemed the ballot was set for the tour's player of the year race. Nick Watney would have been left off the ballot, or at least a long shot. If he is able to win the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open on Sunday, however, Watney may be back in contention for the honor.
With a third round of 7-under 64 at TPC Summerlin, Watney has a share of the lead and in position for his third win of the season.
In a field filled with players looking to make money to save their livelihood, Watney is third on the money list and looking toward much higher aspirations than a tour card. He says that will be an advantage for him in Sunday.
“I mean I think for me experience is very key, and knowing how to handle certain situations,” he said.
Watney was quick to caution, however, that an event like this one is the right setting for a first-time winner.
“But everybody has, you know, even Tiger Woods at one point had never won out here. So you gotta start somewhere, you know. It's going to be a tough day, but I'm looking forward to the challenge.”
