Watney Tied for Vegas Lead With Chance for Third Win if Season

When the PGA Tour play­offs closed last week­end at the Tour Cham­pi­onship, it seemed the bal­lot was set for the tour's player of the year race. Nick Wat­ney would have been left off the bal­lot, or at least a long shot. If he is able to win the Justin Tim­ber­lake Shriners Hos­pi­tals for Chil­dren Open on Sun­day, how­ever, Wat­ney may be back in con­tention for the honor.

With a third round of 7-under 64 at TPC Sum­mer­lin, Wat­ney has a share of the lead and in posi­tion for his third win of the season.

In a field filled with play­ers look­ing to make money to save their liveli­hood, Wat­ney is third on the money list and look­ing toward much higher aspi­ra­tions than a tour card. He says that will be an advan­tage for him in Sunday.

“I mean I think for me expe­ri­ence is very key, and know­ing how to han­dle cer­tain sit­u­a­tions,” he said.

Wat­ney was quick to cau­tion, how­ever, that an event like this one is the right set­ting for a first-time winner.

“But every­body has, you know, even Tiger Woods at one point had never won out here. So you gotta start some­where, you know. It's going to be a tough day, but I'm look­ing for­ward to the challenge.”
