Thompson Duplicates First Round for Sea Island Lead

At 116th on the money list with one event to go, Michael Thomp­son is pretty well set for his play­ing priv­i­leges on the PGA Tour in 2012. His sea­son and his final posi­tion on the cash lad­der could dras­ti­cally improve, how­ever, if he is able to win the McGladrey Classic.

Thomp­son shot his sec­ond con­sec­u­tive 5 under 65 to take a 2-shot lead over Louis Oost­huizen at Sea Island, thriv­ing in the St. Simons Island wind.

“I’ve always been a low-ball hit­ter all my life,” Thomp­son said. “I’ve learned to hit the ball high since I’ve turned pro­fes­sional. But I’ve always prided myself on being able to hit the ball as low as I can, and obvi­ously that’s really good for wind play.”

Hav­ing been in the thick of it at the Trav­el­ers Cham­pi­onship and the Cana­dian Open this year, Thomp­son will put on the blind­ers in hopes of win­ning for the first time on the PGA Tour.

“What I learned ear­lier in the year being in con­tention is that it’s very easy to become jit­tery when you’re play­ing in the last group. What I mean by that is being aware of all the dif­fer­ent noises that are going on. You have so many peo­ple watch­ing you, it’s never quiet, and when it does get quiet you can hear every lit­tle sound.

“So I’m really going to try to ignore every­thing going on around me, and my cad­die and I just stay with our process and enjoy it.”
