Stricker Approves of Couples’ Selection of Woods

Steve Stricker is sup­port­ive of Fred Cou­ples’ deci­sion to appoint Tiger Woods to the Pres­i­dents Cup team head­ing to Aus­tralia next month.

“I think it’s great. I talk to Tiger through tex­ting every now and then. He’s really excited. We’re look­ing for­ward to it. I think he’ll be ready, too,” Stricker said to the Mil­wau­kee Journal-Sentinel. “He’ll find a way to get it done. When you play him one on one, he’ll find a way. Just like at the Ryder Cup last year. He trounced the guy he was play­ing (Francesco Moli­nari of Italy, 4 and 3, in sin­gles). He loves match play.”

Going unde­feated together two years ago at Hard­ing Park, Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker cemented them­selves as a for­mi­da­ble match play duo at the Pres­i­dents Cup. Clearly, then, Stricker has a bias in favor of Woods.

The Wis­con­sin native does not under­stand why Inter­na­tional team cap­tain Greg Nor­man crit­i­cized his counterpart’s deci­sion to add Woods to the team. Nor­man set such a prece­dent in 2009.

“I don’t know why Greg said what he did. He did basi­cally the same thing with Adam Scott a cou­ple years ago when Adam wasn’t play­ing well,” he said. “It kind of turned Adam’s game around. So I don’t know where that came from.”

The PGA Tour career of Trevor Immel­man – includ­ing his 2008 Mas­ters title – may never have been pos­si­ble were it not for his appoint­ment to the Pres­i­dents Cup team by fel­low South African Gary Player in 2005.

Stricker seems to hypoth­e­size Woods could expe­ri­ence a sim­i­lar bump from the Pres­i­dents Cup nod when his stock is at an all-time low.
