Rickie Fowler Gets First Pro Win

Rickie Fowler has had a cou­ple close calls on the PGA Tour while chas­ing his first win as a pro­fes­sional. On Sun­day, he closed the deal. Not on the PGA Tour, but at the Korea Open.

Fowler won the Kolon Korea Open, part of the OneA­sia Tour, by six strokes over runner-up Rory McIl­roy. Fowler had entered the final round lead­ing by four.

“It feels great to have the first win,” Fowler said in the post-round press con­fer­ence. “I played well all week, although I did have to hang in on Fri­day and post a score. But on Thurs­day, Sat­ur­day and Sun­day I had good con­trol of my ball, I drove well, and I made some putts.”

How good a tour is the OneA­sia? It was started only in 2009, but was orga­nized by the Aus­tralasian Tour, Japan Tour and Korean Tour, and golfers from those tours tend to make the fields for OneA­sia tour­na­ments. The OneA­sia is and unwel­come rival to the Asian Tour, but the Asian Tour has, to this point, main­tained its supe­rior status.

In addi­tion to the Fowler and McIl­roy, the biggest names in the Korea Open field were Y.E. Yang, who won the tour­na­ment last year, plus Seung-yul Noh and Kyung-tae Kim. A qual­ity field.
