Report: Tseng to Be Offered Exemption to Play in Puerto Rico Open

Yani Tseng will be offered an exemp­tion to the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open for next sea­son, accord­ing to Golfweek.

Sid­ney Wolf, gen­eral chair­man of the event, said he intends to invite Tseng to com­pete in the oppo­site field event in 2012. The tour­na­ment will be held Mar. 8–11 at Trump Inter­na­tional in Puerto Rico, oppo­site the WGC-Cadillac Cham­pi­onship at Doral.

“Hav­ing the No. 1 player here would open our event to a broader audi­ence,” Wolf told the pub­li­ca­tion. “It could open up the pos­si­bil­ity of a LPGA event here, and ulti­mately help us raise funds for our char­i­ties. It would also cre­ates aware­ness of Puerto Rico glob­ally, which would eco­nom­i­cally be very pos­i­tive for the island.”

Last week, Tseng expressed inter­est in com­pet­ing against men, say­ing, “If an oppor­tu­nity presents itself, I would like to play in a PGA tour­na­ment to learn more from male golfers.”

Trump Inter­na­tional plays to a length of 7,569 yards — approx­i­mately 1,000 more yards than the aver­age LPGA course. Speak­ing last night on Twit­ter, Sol­heim Cup player Karen Stup­ples said Tseng could make the adjustment.

“[S]he would need to get used to hit­ting a lot of mid to long irons rather than wedges,” Stup­ples said. “Skill is good enough just would need to get used to the longer clubs and scor­ing with them.”
