What Are the Tour and Tournament Cut Rules?

Most professional golf tournaments have a cut; that is, the field is reduced following (most typically) two rounds of play, with the lower half (or so) of the field going home and only the better scorers continuing until the tournament’s end. The specific regulations governing tournament cuts varies depending on the tour, and there is some variation among the major championships’ cut rules, too. Check out the following FAQ entries for the cut rules of each listed tour or tournament: Our sports betting news features unique sports betting articles as well as current sports news compiled from leading wire services. Poll: More Majors for Bubba?

So Bubba Watson is the 2012 Masters champion. Watson’s rise to prominence is impressive, as is, certainly, the variety of shots he’s able to pull off. What do you think the future holds for him? Do you see Bubba being a golfer who can remain at a high level for a long time, who can win more majors? Or do you think Watson just hit his high point and is unlikely go this way — major champion — again? Vote in the poll, and leave your comments. This Week: Zurich Classic

The PGA Tour takes a detour out of Texas to Louisiana this week for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Bubba Watson is the defending champion. So Bubba’s back, his first tournament since winning the 2012 Masters. It’s been quite a few weeks for Watson as he made the media rounds; it will be good to see him back on the course and interesting to note how large are the crowds following his group. Among others in the Zurich Classic field are Luke Donald, Nick Watney, Ernie Els, Graeme McDowell, Steve Stricker, Justin Rose, Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson,...

Grace Full of Accomplishments at China Open

The winner of the European Tour’s Volvo China Open on Sunday was Branden Grace, a 23-year-old from South Africa playing his rookie season after advancing onto tour via Q-School. Not a household name, not a golfer who is exactly famous yet out there in the wide world of golf. But perhaps he just needs a little more time, because he’s off to an amazing start, in both 2012 and in his career. How so? Thus so: The Volvo China Open win is Grace’s third Euro Tour victory of the year. It’s only April folks, and there have been only 15 tournaments so far. Grace previously...

13-Year-Old Misses Cut on Euro Tour

A 13-year-old is now the youngest golfer to play in a European Tour tournament. Guan Tian-Lang of China teed off Thursday in the Volvo China Open, shooting 79 in Round 1. He followed that up with a second-round 77, finishing at 12-over 156, missing the cut. But pretty impressive for a 13-year-old playing a European Tour event on a 7,500-yard course. Guan got into the tournament by finishing fourth in a qualifying event. In 2011, he won the Boys 11–12 division at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego by 11 strokes. Guan, at 13...

Wie’s Hawaii Homecoming Doesn’t Help Her Struggles

Michelle Wie is struggling. Her golf game in 2012 has been a mess. And now she’s missed her third straight cut. This one probably hurts more, however, since it happened at the LPGA Lotte Championship in Wie’s home state of Hawaii. On a golf course with which she’s very familiar. Wie shot 78–76 over two rounds at Ko Olina Golf Club at the Lotte, missing the cut by seven strokes. Her 154 total was 18 shots worse than the leaders, and only 12 golfers who completed the first two rounds posted worse scores. Wie was paired in the first two rounds with Lexi Thompson and...

This Week: Texas Open and China Open

The golf world visits the second-largest U.S. state and the third-largest country (both by area) this week with the PGA Tour Valero Texas Open and the European Tour Volvo China Open. The Texas Open is played on the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio. In 2011, that golf course was seventh-toughest on the PGA Tour in relation to par, but every course ahead of it was either a par-70 or par-71. Oaks is a par-72. And in stroke average, TPC San Antonio was the toughest track on the PGA Tour in 2011. Kevin Na’s infamous 16 on one hole didn’t help in that deparment. The defending...

Oosthuizen Recovers With a Victory

One week ago, Bubba Watson defeated Louis Oosthuizen in a playoff to win the 2012 Masters. In the week since, the Bubbster made the rounds of talk shows in New York City, a well-deserved victory lap, and one in which his wit and sense of fun probably drew a few more fans to golf. And Oosthuizen? He merely hopped a plane and spent 30 hours traveling to play in the Maybank Malaysian Open. Was the effort worth it? You bet. Oosthuizen won in Malaysia today, despite the travel fatique, despite weather interruptions to the tournament, despite having to play 26 holes...

Harrington Winner Again in Par-3 Contest

Jinx? Padraig Harrington ain’t afraid of no stinkin’ jinx. (Besides, there’s no such thing as a jinx.) Harrington was the co-winner of the Masters Par-3 Contest on Wednesday, sharing the top spot with Jonathan Byrd. The “tournament” — more like a fun day, really — was cut short by weather with plenty of golfers failing to complete their nine holes. This is the third time Harrington has won the Par-3 Contest. As we hear over and over every year, no golfer has won the Par-3 Contest and The Masters in the same year. But, really, there’s no good reason...
