Raiders’ Davis Died of Heart Failure Three Days After Throat Surgery
OAKLAND, Calif. — The cause of former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis’ death has been determined to have been heart failure. The death certificate issued by Alameda County says Davis died at age 82 at 2:45 a.m. on Oct. 8 from an abnormal heart rhythm, congestive heart failure and a heart muscle disease. He died at the Oakland Airport Hilton, where he lived during much of the football season. TCU Builds Big Lead, Holds Off BYU 38–28
ARLINGTON, Texas — Three mishaps on punt snaps were one too many for BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall. The TCU Horned Frogs gladly took advantage. TCU scored 21 points off BYU’s three special teams miscues, building a big first-half lead over BYU and holding on for a 38–28 victory Friday night. “I can’t even describe it,” Mendenhall said. “It caught me completely by surprise, not only once or twice, but three times. After the first one, you think it’s an accident. After the second one, you realize something isn’t quite right, and the third one is probably...
Oilers Beat Avalanche
DENVER — Traditionally, hosting the Edmonton Oilers in the second game of a back-to-back has been guaranteed win night for the Colorado Avalanche. Never mind the altitude and how it may affect visitors, considering the fact the Oilers got into town well after last call and just hours after an emotional victory over the Washington Capitals, it was always going to be tough sledding for Tom Renney’s crew. Yet, the Oilers were able to keep the Avalanche at bay until finding their skating legs and then held off a late charge to pull out a 3–1...
Ramsay Maintains Spanish Lead as Garcia Pulls Closer
Scot Richie Ramsay maintained his advantage over the field at the Andalucia Masters on Friday as windy conditions and tough scoring persisted. Ramsay shot 1-over 72 at Valderrama to maintain a 2-stroke lead over Gregory Havret going into the weekend. The other two of the four players under par through 36 holes are Spaniards. Sergio Garcia is 2 under in search of his second consecutive European Tour win after ending a 3-year drought last week at the Castello Masters. Miguel Angel Jimenez is a shot behind Garcia. Garcia is tempering his excitement...

Next season would be his 17th as Cardinals manager and La Russa is just 35 wins from passing John McGraw for second place on the all-time list behind Connie Mack....
Hamilton and Perez Penalised for Ignoring Yellow Flags
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Sauber’s Sergio Perez have both been handed three-place grid penalties for Sunday’s Indian race. The New Delhi stewards decided Hamilton and Perez had ignored double waved yellow flags during Practice One at the Buddh International Circuit on Friday morning. The Briton and the Mexican were caught out right at the very end of the opening practice session by the yellow flags which had been prompted by Williams’ Pastor Maldonado, who had stopped with an engine failure at Turn 16. Hamilton finished the session...
Nugent-Hopkins Stays in the Bigs
DENVER — The suspense is over as the Edmonton Oilers confirmed the obvious on Friday. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will be staying with club for the remainder of the season and is not going back to his junior team in Red Deer. The first overall pick in last summer’s NHL Entry draft will play his 10th game of the year Friday night in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche, officially triggering the first-year of his entry-level contract. “It’s pretty exciting for me,” Nugent-Hopkins said. “There can be some doubt when you don’t get told for a while, but I just...
