SPOKANE, Wash. – Mike Leach has reached an agree­ment to be the new foot­ball coach at Wash­ing­ton State.

An offi­cial within the ath­letic depart­ment told The Asso­ci­ated Press on Wednes­day that Leach has reached a ver­bal agree­ment to replace Paul Wulff, but has not signed a con­tract. The offi­cial spoke on con­di­tion of anonymity because he was not autho­rized to com­ment pub­licly on the matter.

Leach posted an 84–43 record at Texas Tech, tak­ing the Red Raiders to nine bowl appear­ances in 10 sea­sons. He was fired in 2009 over an inci­dent in which a player with a con­cus­sion was made to stand in a shed dur­ing practice.

Wulff was fired Tues­day after four los­ing seasons.
