In just two months the NCAA March Mad­ness tour­na­ment will take place and the out­look for col­lege bas­ket­ball on the west coast seems to be dire. It is increas­ingly likely that just one team from the Pac-10 will reach the NCAA men’s tournament.

Where to begin? Stanford, which has made 15 tour­na­ment appear­ances since 1989, is play­ing under .500 this year. Ari­zona, who has appeared in 25 straight NCAA tour­na­ments, lost at home to Brigham Young by 30. Ore­gon State lost a game to Seat­tle by 51, South­ern Cal­i­for­nia banned itself from post­sea­son play because of rules vio­la­tions, and even UCLA, with a record 11 tour­na­ment cham­pi­onships, has achieved a dis­mal 7–10 record. Admit­tedly they have been knocked back by injuries, the depar­ture of sopho­more Drew Gor­don and the loss of fresh­man Irue Hol­i­day to the NBA. The Bru­ins have also had an awful season.
