Rolle: Giants Were Confident, Not Cocky, in Title Run

The Giants unabashedly expressed their confidence — some might call it cockiness — during their run to the Super Bowl XLVI title. And at the forefront of it all was safety Antrel Rolle. Consider: Rolle refused to put the Packers on a pedestal before their divisional-round game, then called out 49ers tight end Vernon Davis ahead of the NFC Championship Game. And heading into Super Bowl week, Rolle was blunt in saying the Giants wouldn’t have boarded the plane for Indianapolis if they didn’t believe they would beat the Patriots — which they did. Was it legit...

Ravens’ Caldwell Not Intent on Making Flacco the Next Manning

New Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell is making it a point to set the bar low for Joe Flacco. At least, lower than where it would be if Flacco were Peyton Manning. Caldwell coached Manning, a four-time league MVP, for a full decade. While he sees plenty in Flacco that makes him “dangerous,” he’s not trying to make the Ravens’ starter the next Manning. “Everybody’s different,” Caldwell told the team’s official website. “[Flacco] has his own strengths, and what we want to try to do is accentuate those. “I’m not here to try...

Solomon, Integral to Two 49ers Super Bowl Titles, Dies at 59

SAN FRANCISCO — Freddie Solomon, the former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver who became known as “Fabulous Freddie” and committed himself to community service for decades, died Monday. He was 59. The 49ers announced the passing of Solomon, who lived in Florida and had battled cancer over the past year. He played on the first two of the franchise’s four Super Bowl championship teams in the 1980s during an 11-year NFL career. “The 49ers lost a member of our family today,” 49ers CEO Jed York posted on his Twitter account. “We’ll miss you,...

Ravens Committed to Signing Flacco to Long-Term Extension

The Baltimore Ravens and quarterback Joe Flacco’s agent, Joe Linta, are scheduled to begin talks on a contract extension next week at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, a league source said Tuesday. The Ravens are committed to keeping the 2008 first-round draft pick, whose contract expires after the 2012 season, and Flacco hopes to sign a long-term extension this offseason. Flacco led the Ravens to the AFC Championship Game this past season — a last-second 23–20 loss to the New England Patriots — and he threw for 3,610 yards, 20 touchdowns...

Randy Moss Says He’s “Coming to Tear Somebody’s Heads Off, Man”

Randy Moss says he’s “coming to tear somebody’s heads off, man” Posted by Mike Florio on February 13, 2012, 11:29 PM EST In 1998, then-rookie Randy Moss nonchalantly vowed to come to the NFL and “rip it up.” And he did. Now, a season after retiring, Moss has made a more colorful promise. “I’m coming to tear somebody’s heads off, man,” Moss said in a compelling Monday night video session on Ustream, roughly 12 hours after using the technology to announce his return to football. He dubs his casual laptop encounters with fans “Moss TV,”...

Former Seahawks LB Tatupu in New Orleans on Monday

Former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu visited the New Orleans Saints on Monday, a league source said. The evolution of the NFL:Take a look at how the NFL has evolved from its humble roots, and the efforts being made to ensure it continues to grow. Tatupu did not play during the 2011 season after being released by the Seahawks after the conclusion of the lockout. Tatupu was a Pro Bowl selection his first three seasons in the NFL, and he was first-team All-Pro in 2007 when he had 83 tackles, four interceptions and three forced fumbles. Follow...

Weekend Rewind: Teams Can Carry Over Cap Space

Weekend rewind: Teams can carry over cap space Posted by Mike Florio on February 13, 2012, 4:56 PM EST Since plenty of you still don’t check out PFT on non-work time, every once in a while there’s a weekend story that bears repeating on Monday. On Sunday, we had several items regarding a new twist in the labor deal that allows teams to automatically carry over any unused cap space from one year to the next. To do it, the team in question simply has to want to do it, and to reduce its intentions to writing. There’s no down side. Though some thought that carrying...

Moss Ends His Retirement, Sets Sights on NFL Return

Randy Moss celebrated his 35th birthday Monday by announcing the end of his short-lived retirement. “I just wanna go to a team and play some football,” the six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver said on a video posted at the website Ustream.tv, according to ProFootballTalk.com. Moss didn’t play in 2011 after a turbulent 2010 season that included stops with the Patriots, Vikings and Titans. He said Monday he retired because of issues he needed to address off the field, but his family has since told him, “It’s fine, whatever you wanna do.” “Faith, family and...

Moss’ Agent Claims Interest, but Final Options Could Be Limited

Randy Moss wants back into the NFL, announcing online Monday — his 35th birthday — that his one-season retirement was really a sabbatical. The timing puts him back on the radar just as teams have started formulating their draft and free-agency boards. Nice touch, injecting himself back into the consciousness of the NFL right as teams are figuring out whether they need rookie or veteran help at wideout. Joel Segal, Moss’ agent, said teams have already called to gather preliminary information about Moss following his declaration. The teams mainly...
