FIA Entry List for 2012 Announced
The 2011 Formula 1 season has barely ended after last weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix and the FIA has announced the list of official team and driver entries for the 2012 season. There were no real surprises, except for what was left off the list, as neither Toro Rosso driver and neither Force India driver and Pedro de la Rosa who is supposed to race with Hispania racing, were all left off the list for the moment. The driver market will fall into place over the winter with a chain reaction once one or two drivers’ contracts have been signed, no doubt. Raikkonen to Return With Renault in 2012
After weeks of speculation Renault confirmed on Tuesday that Kimi Raikkonen will make a comeback to race for the team in 2012. Raikkonen, who left the sport at the end of 2009 to pursue a rallying career, has signed a two-year agreement with the team. “I’m delighted to be coming back to Formula One after a two-year break, and I’m grateful to Lotus Renault GP for offering me this opportunity,” said the 32 year-old. “My time in the World Rally Championship has been a useful stage in my career as a driver, but I can’t deny the fact that my hunger...
Nine 2012 Driver Slots Open on FIA Entry List
Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has published the current 2012 championship entry list. As already confirmed, three constructors change their names next season — Renault become Lotus, Lotus become Caterham, and Virgin become Marussia. Five teams have yet to finalise their driver line-ups, with Marussia’s Charles Pic the only rookie confirmed so far. Despite having been announced by HRT, Spanish veteran Pedro de la Rosa is absent from the list, and the team — who ran Cosworth power this year and last — have no engine supplier listed. Red...
Head to End Direct F1 Involvement at Williams
Williams co-founder and engineering director Patrick Head will play no active role in the team next season, he has confirmed. Head will instead switch his attentions to the team’s successful hybrid technologies business. “I am not going to be directly part of the Williams Formula One programme next year,” Head told news agency , after the team completed their worst-ever season in F1 at Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix. Head, 65, set up Williams Grand Prix Engineering with team principal Frank Williams back in 1977, but has deliberately reduced his...
Vettel’s Sense of History
There was a wonderful moment in the Brazilian Grand Prix today when Sebastian Vettel again showed how special he is as a driver. Sure, the race provided a happy ending to the season with the victory scored by Mark Webber, Vettel’s teammate at Red Bull. But as Vettel went around the track with a broken gearbox, he said over his team radio that he felt like Ayrton Senna at this same track in 1991, when he had a problem with his gearbox — but won the race. It is refreshing to see such a young driver with a sense of history of the sport. There are...
FIA Post-Qualifying Press Conference — Brazil
Reproduced with kind permission of the FIA Drivers: 1 — Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull); 2 — Mark Webber (Red Bull); 3 — Jenson Button (McLaren). Q: Sebastian, a record 15th pole of the season. Describe your feelings at this historic moment?Sebastian Vettel: Yes, it is difficult. I mean there has been quite some talk before the qualifying, before this weekend, about this particular record and the best thing was just not to think about it at all. Yesterday we did have sort of a rough start to the weekend where I wasn’t happy 100 per...
Practice Two — Hamilton Pips Vettel at Interlagos
Lewis Hamilton’s rehabilitation continued in Brazil on Friday afternoon as he topped the second free practice session, but it was a close-run thing as the top eight drivers — from McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes — were bracketed by just 0.480s. Hamilton lapped his McLaren in 1m 13.392s, 0.167s ahead of Sebastian Vettel on 1m 13.559s and 0.195s up on the latter’s Red Bull team mate Mark Webber, who recorded 1m 13.587s. Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari was rejuvenated by an engine change between sessions (since it was still within his allocation...
Kobayashi Sports Linkin Park Helmet Design
Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi is wearing a special helmet livery in Brazil this weekend, personally designed for him by Joe Hahn, producer and member of US rock group Linkin Park. The helmet will be auctioned after Sunday’s race to raise money for Japanese earthquake victims. It follows a recent encounter in Singapore between Kobayashi and the band, whose Music for Relief project has raised more than $ 5 million for disaster victims and environmental projects. Of this, $ 700,000 has already been donated to Japan following the disasters...
FIA Thursday Press Conference — Brazil
Reproduced with kind permission of the FIA Drivers — Rubens Barrichello (Williams), Jenson Button (McLaren), Felipe Massa (Ferrari), Daniel Ricciardo (HRT), Michael Schumacher (Mercedes) and Bruno Senna (Renault). Q: Bruno, I think, first of all, you’ve had a pretty busy time since Abu Dhabi because you came straight here?Bruno Senna: Yeah, well, to be honest last week I took [off] to rest and to get acclimatised as well. It was a bit cold in Brazil, so I didn’t get to enjoy the sun but this week has been very busy and I think it’s going to be a very busy...
Pirelli to Race New Soft Compound at Interlagos
Drivers at this weekend’s Formula 1 Grande Premio Petrobras do Brasil 2011 will have the choice of Pirelli’s soft and medium dry tyres. However, the soft will be a previously unraced compound that was tested by the teams during last week’s Abu Dhabi young driver test and during Friday practice at the Nurburgring in July. During Friday practice at Interlagos, drivers will also have two extra sets of an experimental hard tyre which has already been trialled by Lucas di Grassi and Pirelli’s Toyota TF109 car in private tests at Jerez and...
