Margarito to Return on May 26
Tucson (BOXING/Newsfeed) — Former welterweight champ Antonio Margarito will return to the ring on May 26 in Tucson, Arizona against an undetermined — but most likely hand-picked — opponent. Margarito, 34, has lost three of four fights since being exposed as a hand-wrapping cheater. The fight will be televised on Spanish-language network Azteca America. A win may put Margarito in line for another big payday later this year against middleweight beltholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.. 25 Years Later, Debate on Leonard-Hagler Continues
April 6 marked the 25th anniversary of the classic fight between Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. After twelve back-and-forth rounds, Leonard was awarded a disputed 12-round split decision: 118–110 and 115–113 for Leonard and 115–113 for Hagler. The debate over who should have gotten the decision continues to this day. Did Leonard truly do enough to win the fight and take the middleweight crown from Hagler? Or did he simply exceed expectations (remember, he came into the fight as a big underdog) and impress the judges with flashy flurries that...
Nonaire, Chavez Jr. Win Decisions
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. retained his WBC middleweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over tough Marco Antonio Rubio. Scores were 118–110, 116–112, and 115–113. Chavez Jr. struggled to make weight — and then put on nearly 22 pounds in the 30 hours between the weigh-in and the fight — but looked strong throughout and did not fade down the stretch. However, he reportedly skipped a mandatory post-fight drug test so there may be more to this story. Combine this with his arrest for drunk driving just two weeks prior to the fight and it looks like the 25-year-old...

Mayweather, Pacquiao Select Next Opponents
Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao have selected their next opponents and — to no one’s surprise — they will once again NOT be facing each other. On May 5, Mayweather will move up to junior middleweight to challenge Miguel Cotto for Cotto’s WBA title. Mayweather, who was granted a license despite facing an 87-day jail sentence, was supposed to begin his sentence on January 6 but the star of Venada pushed his report date back to June 1. On June 9, Manny Pacquiao will defend his WBO welterweight title against undefeated WBO junior welterweight...
Vitali Klitschko Outpoints Dereck Chisora
40-year-old Vitali Klitschko retained his WBC heavyweight title with a unanimous — but tougher than expected — decision over Dereck Chisora of Great Britain. Chisora made headlines by slapping Klitschko’s face at the weigh in, spitting water in the face of Wladimir Klitschko before the fight and getting arrested for brawling with fellow British heavyweight David Haye at the post-fight press conference. During the fight, Chisora did better than expected. He was never a threat to actually win the fight but he showed a good chin and did what he could to compete...
Povetkin Narrowly Outpoints Huck to Retain Belt
Undefeated Alexander Povetkin retained his WBA heavyweight belt with a much tougher than anticipated points win over WBO cruiserweight champ Marco Huck. Povetkin looked good early but tired as the fight wore on and was almost out on his feet when the bell rang to end the twelfth and final round. Povetkin won an Olympic gold medal in 2004 but after this fight it’s easy to see why former trainer Teddy Atlas kept him away from the Klitschkos … he would’ve been destroyed. Despite giving up 20 pounds, Puck rocked Povetkin with right hands on a number of occasions and looked...
Wladimir Klitschko Stops Feeble Mormeck in Four
When it was announced that IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko would defend his titles against 39-year-old former cruiserweight champ Jean-Marc Mormeck, it sounded like a one-sided waste of everyone’s time. In the ring, it was actually much worse than expected. Mormeck gave one of the worst efforts in heavyweight title history … as bad as any of the frightened opponents that froze up in front of Mike Tyson during Iron Mike’s prime. Mormeck was dropped by a right hand in round two and finished off by a left-right combination in round four. Others...
