The Matron Stakes, an Amer­i­can Thor­ough­bred horse race, is a Spring/Summer event (along with the Futu­rity Stakes) held at Bel­mont Park in Elmont, Long Island, New York. A Grade II event, the race is con­tested by two-year-old fil­lies and is run on dirt with a total dis­tance of 7 fur­longs. The race car­ries a purse of $250,000.

The Matron Stakes was inau­gu­rated at Mor­ris Park Race­course in The Bronx, New York and was moved to the Bel­mont Park after 1905. The race was also hosted at Pim­lico Race Course, Bal­ti­more, Mary­land in 1910 through some spe­cial arrange­ments and was hosted at Aque­duct Race­track in 1960 and from 1962 to 1968.

Before 1902, the race was run in two divi­sions: one for fil­lies and one for colts but got restricted to fil­lies in 1915. It was changed from Grade I to a Grade II event in 2007.

The race was also not con­tested from 1895 to 1898 and 1915 to 1922. In response to the New York State Leg­is­la­tion ban on parimutuel bet­ting, the race was can­celled from 1911 to 1913. It again got can­celed in 2001 in obser­vance of the Sep­tem­ber 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Mar­ton Stakes is con­sid­ered as a prep race to the Breed­ers’ Cup Juve­nile Fil­lies because of its unique sched­ule and tim­ing. In effect, it is a filly coun­ter­part to the Bel­mont Futu­rity Stakes.
