Phillies and Ruiz to Sign Deal
Catcher Carlos Ruiz is all set to become more financially secure this week when he signs a new contract with the Phillies. It has been reported that the deal is a three-year pact worth $8.85 million and includes a club option for a fourth year worth $5 million or a $500,000 buyout.
The 31-year-old Panamanian Ruiz hit.255 with 43 RBIs and a career-high nine runs last in 2009. His postseason average is .303 after starting every Phillies playoff game the last two years and they have reached the World Series twice, winning in 2008.
The three-year deal will buy out each of Ruiz’s arbitration years and he will be eligible for free agency after the 2012 season. Other arbitration-eligible players have agreed to a new contracts with the Phillies are; right-handed reliever Chad Durbin who signed a one-year deal Tuesday, and Joe Blanton and Shane Victorino also finalized three year contracts late last week.
