San Deigo and Oakland Dig Deep for Today’s Pitching Matchup

Oakland (MLB/Janes) — Princeton graduate Ross Ohlendorf knows a thing or two about the potential value of a good starting pitcher. The 29-year-old righty has a degree in Operations Research and Financial Engineering, and wrote a 126-page thesis on the investments made and returns reaped by Major League clubs with Draft picks from 1989–93. So Ohlendorf, who has been tabbed as the Padres starter for Saturday’s game in Oakland, should understand just how valuable a strong start would be to his team and its injury-riddled pitching staff. The Padres have...

Ellis’ Three-Run Walk-Off Blast Boosts Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (MLB/Gurnick) — In nine professional seasons, A.J. Ellis never hit more than eight home runs at any level, but he already has five this year in the Major Leagues, including Saturday night’s dramatic three-run walk-off blast in the bottom of the ninth inning that gave the Dodgers a 6–3 win over the Astros. “It was probably the best feeling of my baseball life,” said the 31-year-old Ellis. “It was pretty awesome and pretty cool to run around the bases and hear the crowd and cheering. I’ve gotten to see Andre [Ethier] and Matt [Kemp] do that...

Halladay Exits Start Due to Shoulder Soreness

ST. LOUIS (MLB/Newsfeed) — Roy Halladay’s outing against the Cardinals on Sunday lasted just two innings as he exited as a precaution due to right shoulder soreness. He was pinch-hit for in the third with Philadelphia trailing 4–0 after throwing 36 pitches. Halladay allowed a two-out grand slam to Yadier Molina in the first inning after loading the bases on two singles and a walk. Halladay shut down the Cards in order in the second, inducing three groundouts. He was done after allowing four runs on four hits with a walk and no strikeouts. The outing...

Moyer’s Foundation Receives $1 Million Grant

SAN DIEGO (MLB/Newsfeed) — Rockies pitcher Jamie Moyer’s charitable foundation to help children in distress by providing education and support received the largest single grant in its 12-year history, $ 1 million from the New York Life Foundation. The Moyer Foundation will be able to meet program goals such as expanding services to reach thousands of grieving children at free camps across the United States and Canada. Moyer and his wife, Karen, are co-founders of the foundation. The grant will focus on sustaining and establishing new...

Harper’s Swipe of Home a Measure of Payback

WASHINGTON (MLB/Newsfeed) — Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper showed how to get revenge in a 9–3 loss to the Phillies on Sunday night. With two outs in the first inning, Cole Hamels hit Harper with his first pitch to the 19-year-old rookie, then acknowledged that was his intention. “I was trying to hit him,” Hamels said. “I’m not going to deny it. That’s just … something that I grew up watching, that’s what happened, so I’m just trying to continue the old baseball. I think some people kind of get away from it. I remember when I was a rookie, the...

McNamee to Testify This Week in Clemens Trial

WASHINGTON (MLB/Newsfeed) — The government’s case against Roger Clemens reaches a crucial juncture as the fourth week of the former star pitcher’s federal perjury trial begins Monday. Brian McNamee, the strength trainer who told Congress he injected Clemens with performance-enhancing drugs on numerous occasions and saved evidence he and the government contend proves it, is due on the stand early in the week for what is expected to be the most dramatic testimony of the trial. With the defense poised to attack McNamee’s credibility, decisions about...

Fister Slated to Make First Rehab Start Wednesday

Detroit (MLB/Silva) — From CBS Sports’ Danny Knobler comes word that Tigers right-hander Doug Fister has been cleared to make his first minor league rehab start Wednesday evening with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. Fister has been on the disabled list since the first week of the regular season due to a costochondral (rib cage) strain that he suffered in the middle of his 2012 debut. He’s been playing catch for more than a week and made it through a full bullpen session Saturday without feeling any lingering discomfort. Fister could rejoin the Tigers’...

Mets Battle Back in Extras to Beat Rockies

DENVER (MLB/DiComo) — Terry Collins had stressed it the night before at Coors Field, lamenting that leads “are never safe here.” So it was Sunday afternoon, when the Mets received a standout performance from Johan Santana and finally supported him with some early offense, only to blow two late leads at Coors. It could have made for an unhappy plane ride to Houston. Instead, Ike Davis cued a party by plating the winning run in a 6–5 victory with his ground-ball single in the 11th. The Mets dressed up afterward in cowboy hats and boots and wore brightly-colored...

Dodgers Surge to Top Spot of MLB Power Rankings

As reported on MLB.com, this week’s MLB power rankings see the Dodgers surge to top spot.   This Week’s Power Rankings This Week Movement Power Player Last Week 1 A three-game home sweep of the Nationals over the weekend has put the boys from Chavez Ravine in our top spot this week. Their 16–6 record is tied for tops in the Majors with the Rangers, and a lot of it still has to do with Kemp, who continues to astound. The latest feat of heroicism was a 10th-inning walk-off homer deep, and we’re talking DEEP, into the Los Angeles night on Saturday. 3 2 How...

Matusz, Hughes Hoping to Pitch to Potential

Baltimore (MLB/Fordin) — The Yankees may not have expected so many obstacles in their path to the top of the American League East, but they’re prepared to drive around them. New York will have a chance to pull ahead of the surprising second-place Orioles on Tuesday, and manager Joe Girardi can understand his opponent’s success. “I think it’s because they’ve pitched a lot better,” Girardi said. “Two of the games we played there, we could’ve lost both of those. They were tight games. So I think they’re an improved team. They’re athletic. Nolan...
