Southeast: Will Panthers, Jets Make a Splash?
The trade deadÂline is fast approachÂing, and teams around the NHL are tryÂing to decide whether to buy or sell, and what needs can be or should be addressed. Increased parÂity in recent seaÂsons has limÂited the numÂber of teams willÂing to sell until the final days before the trade deadÂline, but there has still been plenty of deals and big names on the move.
This is going to be a division-by-division look around the NHL and the difÂferÂent needs, both in the short– and long-term, each club might be lookÂing to remÂedy between now and Feb. 27.
A quick note: the salary cap inforÂmaÂtion comes from the web’s unquesÂtioned authorÂity on the subÂjact, www.capgeek.com. AcquiÂsiÂtion space is difÂferÂent than a team’s salary cap space — it is how much salary a team can add on that day and be in comÂpliÂance from then until the end of the seaÂson. The numÂber changes daily, but each team’s figÂure for this exerÂcise will be what it was on Feb. 4 unless that team makes a major move.
We started MonÂday with the CenÂtral DiviÂsion and conÂtinÂued with the NorthÂwest, the Pacific, the Atlantic and the NorthÂeast DiviÂsions. Up next is the final installÂment — the SouthÂeast Division.
FLORIDA PANTHERS
Record: 25–17-11, 61 points (3rd in East)
Goals for: 2.47 (T-21th in NHL)
Goals against: 2.72 (15th)
Power play: 18.5 perÂcent (12th)
Penalty kill: 80.5 perÂcent (25th)
Key injuries: D Dmitry Kulikov (March), RW ScotÂtie Upshall (late March), D Ed Jovanovski (late FebÂruÂary)
AcquiÂsiÂtion space: $ 27.237 million
Skinny: GM Dale TalÂlon overÂhauled the rosÂter between last year at this time and the end of the offÂseaÂson, and coach Kevin Dineen has the new-look PanÂthers firmly in playÂoff conÂtention. So the dilemma for TalÂlon becomes this – does he try to add playÂers one year after blowÂing up his rosÂter, or does he stick with the curÂrent group and wait for the vast colÂlecÂtion of young talÂent he might see find roles with the team in the next seaÂson or two?
If TalÂlon does decide to add, there is an obviÂous need. His top line of Tomas FleisÂchmann, Stephen Weiss and Kris VerÂsteeg has been fanÂtasÂtic but has faded of late. The PanÂthers desÂperÂately need a guy (or two) to bolÂster the secÂond line. Sean BergenÂheim, MarÂcel Goc and Mikael SamuelsÂson have been proÂducÂtive together of late, but that trio should probÂaÂbly be the team’s third line instead of the second.
TalÂlon has colÂlected a vast pool of young talÂent, and the PanÂthers may have the best set of prospects in the League. Erik GudÂbranÂson has become an NHL regÂuÂlar and Jonathan Huberdeau will be a preÂseaÂson Calder TroÂphy favorite next seaÂson. There is a large group of prospects behind them, and TalÂlon could posÂsiÂbly part with one or two to land an impact top-six forÂward (espeÂcially if that player has more years left on his conÂtract). The more likely course of action for TalÂlon is to not yield anyÂthing subÂstanÂtial and look for a minor addiÂtion to help the offense.
WASHINGTON CÂ ITALS
Record: 28–21-5, 61 points (9th)
Goals for: 2.78 (11th)
Goals against: 2.76 (T-16th)
Power play: 18.6 perÂcent (T-10th)
Penalty kill: 80.8 perÂcent (23rd)
Key injuries: C NickÂlas BackÂstrom (indefÂiÂnitely), D Mike Green (Iate FebÂruÂary)
AcquiÂsiÂtion space: $ 5.014 million
Skinny: So much of what the CapÂiÂtals might do, and can do, at the trade deadÂline is tied up in the health of BackÂstrom and Green. If either player is unable to return, then they need to be replaced. That is also the only way GM George McPhee will be able to make a sigÂnifÂiÂcant move withÂout movÂing out salary.
Left Wing – WSH
GOALS: 14 | ASST: 19 | PTS: 33
SOG: 104 | +/-: 5
That said, if the CapÂiÂtals weren’t able to go forÂward withÂout BackÂstrom or Green, how much of a threat to make a run are they really, and would it be worth to mortÂgage imporÂtant assets to try and replace one of them? If Green and BackÂstrom are healthy for the stretch run, McPhee has litÂtle cap space to work with, so he would likely have to move a conÂtract to shake up the rosÂter. DefenseÂman Jeff Schultz had been a near-permanent fixÂture in the press box, but he’s started to get a sweater again.
The proverÂbial eleÂphant in the room is AlexanÂder Semin and his $ 6.7 milÂlion conÂtract. Maybe McPhee could move him to clear up space and then swing another deal to replace him? That is highly unlikely though.
WINNIPEG JETS
Record: 26–24-8, 60 points (10th)
Goals for: 2.34 (T-25th)
Goals against: 2.68 (14th)
Power play: 17.2 perÂcent (T-16th)
Penalty kill: 82.6 perÂcent (T-13th)
Key injuries: NONE
AcquiÂsiÂtion space: $ 34.223 million
Skinny: The Jets could be a fasÂciÂnatÂing team to monÂiÂtor in the next two weeks, or they could end up not doing anyÂthing. WinÂnipeg is cerÂtainly in conÂtention for both the SouthÂeast title and posÂsiÂbly a sevÂenth or eighth seed in the East.
There is plenty of space for GM Kevin ChevelÂdayÂoff to work with, and the Jets are another team that has an obviÂous need for an infuÂsion of offense. Will ChevelÂdayÂoff have the motiÂvaÂtion to act? Being the first year back in WinÂnipeg, it would be a nice endÂing to the story if the Jets sneak into the playÂoffs, but it is also posÂsiÂble ChevelÂdayÂoff tries to conÂtinue to build toward the future and conÂstructÂing a rosÂter than can do more than just squeak into the postseason.
It would hard to see the Jets sellÂing off any playÂers even ChevelÂdayÂoff decides not to buy, so it is posÂsiÂble that deadÂline day will be quiet in WinÂnipeg. This is probÂaÂbly another team that would like to make a minor move or two to help with a playÂoff push, but not a major deal that would alter the long-term plan.
TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING
Record: 23–24-6, 52 points (13th)
Goals for: 2.81 (10th)
Goals against: 3.34 (30th)
Power play: 13.9 perÂcent (26th)
Penalty kill: 80.6 perÂcent (24th)
Key injuries: D MatÂtias Ohlund (posÂsiÂbly out for seaÂson)
AcquiÂsiÂtion space: $ 7.497 million
Skinny: A year after GM Steve YzerÂman swung one of the deals of the seaÂson to land goalie Dwayne RoloÂson, that is a posiÂtion of need yet again. Whether or not YzerÂman tries to find a quick fix and help his team make a late run at the postÂseaÂson or chooses to address the sitÂuÂaÂtion in the offÂseaÂson remains to be deterÂmined. A short-term option might be someÂone like CurÂtis SanÂford from ColumÂbus, while the long-term guys are all the high-profile backÂups like Corey SchneiÂder and Jonathan Bernier.
CenÂter – TBL
GOALS: 4 | ASST: 15 | PTS: 19
SOG: 73 | +/-: –10
The LightÂning could also use another defenseÂman to help with goal preÂvenÂtion, and that is where Ohlund’s absence has really hurt Tampa Bay. If YzerÂman looks to the future, findÂing another young defenseÂman or two to build around with VicÂtor HedÂman is also on the priÂorÂity list.
YzerÂman has a few assets that conÂtendÂing teams would be interÂested in, includÂing pendÂing UFAs Dominic Moore, Pavel Kubina and Brett Clark.
CAROLINA HURRICANES
Record: 20–25-11, 51 points (15th)
Goals for: 2.54 (T-19th)
Goals against: 3.00 (T-26th)
Power play: 14.9 perÂcent (23rd)
Penalty kill: 78.3 perÂcent (27th)
Key injuries: D Joni PitkaÂnen (early March)
AcquiÂsiÂtion space: $ 39.963 million
Skinny: GM Jim RutherÂford has the nicest fruit at the marÂket, but whether or not he fields any offers for them from the queue of conÂtenders remains to be seen. He already locked up defenseÂman Tim GleaÂson on a four-year conÂtract, and he might sign forÂward Tuomo Ruutu as well.
CenÂter – CAR
GOALS: 17 | ASST: 13 | PTS: 30
SOG: 128 | +/-: 2
Ruutu would garÂner lots of interÂest and bring a hefty return, because he’s a verÂsaÂtile, gritty forÂward that sevÂeral top teams could use. If he doesn’t sign an extenÂsion, expect RutherÂford to colÂlect at least two impact assets (think prospect and first-round pick) for Ruutu’s services.
There are other guys to deal as well. GleaÂson might be off the marÂket, but pendÂing UFAs Bryan Allen and Jaroslav Spacek will be enticÂing – espeÂcially in what looks like a weak crop of availÂable defenseÂmen. RutherÂford isn’t likely to blow up his rosÂter, but he can colÂlect a few more pieces for the future (includÂing what will likely be a top-3 pick in June if the team conÂtinÂues in its curÂrent form) and plan on re-tooling for a run at playÂoff conÂtention in 2013.
