Oosthuizen Conquers Kingsbarns for Joint Lead at Dunhill Links

Hav­ing won the Open Cham­pi­onship at the home of golf a lit­tle more than a year ago, one might think Louis Oost­huizen is drawn to links golf.

Oost­huizen again showed why with his open­ing round at Kings­barns in the first round of the Alfred Dun­hill Links Cham­pi­onship on Thurs­day. Shoot­ing 6-under 66, Oost­huizen is part of a 4-way tie for the lead at one of the Euro­pean Tour’s most pop­u­lar stops.

“Just a nice week to come back and expe­ri­ence every­thing again, and you know, it was good fun  play­ing St. Andrews yes­ter­day with my brother.  Yeah, it was a good day today,” Oost­huizen said.

His prior record in the Dun­hill Links defies any belief that Oost­huizen is a links wiz­ard. The South African had played in the 3-course event since 2004, but made just two cuts with his best fin­ish com­ing as a T-40 2004.

He skipped the event last year because of a torn lig­a­ment in his left ankle, dis­ap­point­ing his brother. This year is a chance to make it up to his sibling.

“It was a big shock for my brother because he was sup­posed to play, so I promised him this year I would take him,” he said.

One might won­der if Oost­huizen is moti­vated this week by not gar­ner­ing a captain’s pick from Greg Nor­man for the Pres­i­dents Cup team. That’s not the case.

“I was not sur­prised. I would have done the same, pick­ing two Aus­tralian play­ers. Both of them are play­ing well now and it’s a great thing to play for your coun­try,” he said. “So, yeah, I was more upset that I didn’t make the team.”

Instead, his drive is the still fresh mem­ory of win­ning the Open Championship.

“There’s noth­ing bet­ter than hold­ing the Claret Jug at St. Andrews. Hope­fully the end of the week it’s just a
dif­fer­ent trophy.”
