Cincinnati Cited for Secondary Violations

Cincinnati’s foot­ball pro­gram com­mit­ted sec­ondary recruit­ing vio­la­tions when mem­bers of its coach­ing staff placed 20 imper­mis­si­ble calls to 12 recruits, the NCAA’s Com­mit­tee on Infrac­tions ruled ear­lier today.

The sec­ondary vio­la­tions were part of a much big­ger set of infrac­tions — both major and sec­ondary — com­mit­ted by the school’s ath­letic pro­gram, although most were asso­ci­ated with the women’s bas­ket­ball pro­gram. In all, the self-reported vio­la­tions included over 200 imper­mis­si­ble calls.

As a result, Cincin­nati will face two years pro­ba­tion — from Sep­tem­ber 29, 2011, through Sep­tem­ber 28, 2013 — and the fol­low­ing recruit­ing restric­tions were placed on UC’s foot­ball coaches:

- Pro­hib­ited the foot­ball coach­ing staff from hav­ing recruit­ing tele­phone con­tact dur­ing four dif­fer­ent time peri­ods in 2011.

- Pro­hib­ited three assis­tant foot­ball coaches from mak­ing calls to prospec­tive student-athletes dur­ing vary­ing time peri­ods in the sum­mer of 2011.
