Team Information

During the 1920's, Pittsburgh had a NHL team known as the Pirates, who was forced to fold due to the great depression of that time. 30+ years would have to go by for Pittsburgh to see another professional hockey team back in the city. This time they would name them the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pittsburgh would be one of the six cities to get awarded with an expansion team by the NHL.

The first season of the Penguins was a tough year. The new six teams were tamed by rigorous rules that kept the major talent within the original six teams of the league. The Penguins first team was mostly former minor leaguers. By the end of the season they were just six points behind the leader but finished 5th placed anyhow.

Their first seven years would be hard on the team, being able to reach the playoffs only twice during this period. Even though the Penguins had decent players like, Bryan Watson, Les Binkley and Keith McCreary, they really had a lack of talent that reflected upon their records.

It wasn't until the season of 1974-75 that the Pittsburgh hockey team had a respectful season. They made it to the playoffs easily and lost the series against the New York Islanders. The next year's season the franchise was forced to declare itself under bankruptcy. The team was saved from the clutches of bankruptcy at the last moment, just in time for the beginning of the season. The team would show no signs of being affected by their financial problems, making thru the season into the playoffs for the second year in a row. They lost the playoffs in a series of three games against the Toronto Maple Leafs. This would happen again the next season against the Maple Leafs. Leaving the Penguins with three playoffs in a row and being eliminated twice in a row by the same team.
